Fatal Accident in Detroit Is a Reminder of Road Hazards

On a recent day in Detroit, a tire flew off a vehicle traveling southbound on I-75, bounced over the median and went into the northbound lanes, where it struck a second vehicle, causing the second vehicle to crash. The driver of this second vehicle was killed. According to a news report, this car accident occurred in the late afternoon during clear driving conditions, and the driver of the first vehicle stayed to provide authorities with information following the accident.

Michigan state crash data provided more details in the most recent 2021 statewide report on accident frequency. For the year 2021, there were over 280,000 motor vehicle accidents, with over 1,000 fatalities and 70,000 injuries.

The state reported an increase in the percentage of each of these data points: overall accidents, fatalities and injuries compared to the previous year of data.

In addition to all of these physical injuries, the state also recorded over 1 million property damage cases in the past five years of data collection.
